I went to Sogang University with a friend of mine. He was asked to go by the head teacher in order to be part of a photoshoot for the next textbook. He’s already in one of the books, the info pamphlet, and web site - but the teachers like him and he’s done a lot for them. Anyhow he was also going to register for the final level winter semester and suggested I register at the same time, so I went.

Since I was there I was asked to participate in the photoshoot. Apparently I’ll be in the level 4 textbook. If this is true, I’ll be sitting on the grass with a about 4-6 students depending on which picture they use (I was in all of them). The funny thing here is that this semester I’ll be doing level 2 or 3 depending on how my level test goes (Novemeber 17th is my scheduled day) so eventually when I make it to level four, I’ll be in a class looking at a textbook with a picture of myself in it and talking about it. (continued in the extended entry)

I’m actually very excited about this coming winter semester. Ever since I arrived in Korea (1997) I’ve wanted to formally study Korean. However due to a number of circumstances I’ve never been able to with the exception of one semester in the evening program at Ewha. The bonus here is that I will be studying full-time and not teaching at the same time. My entire life will be focused on Korean language. I won’t be doing anything teaching related - nothing with my web sites or even writing the textbook I’m working on.

You can expect a lot of action on this here blog, come December. I actually spoke a lot of Korean today for the first time in ages and it felt good, though I could really recognize my limitations. When I level test I’ll either be a strong level 2 or a weak level 3 - either option is fine with me and both have advantages so right now I’m in wait and see mode.

  1. Good for you for enrolling into the Sogang program. If you think you are placed to low then you can always move up.  From a foundational standpoint I’ve found that level 2 is very important.  Level 3 is just as important, but if one’s foundational concepts in level 2 are weak obviously level 3 will prove difficult.  If you’re speaking skills are weaker than your other skillsets you might find level 3 to be difficult at first.  But, if you keep on pushing through I’m sure it’ll come with time and practice.

That’s pretty cool to know that you’ll be in the level 4 book.  While all of the teachers at Sogang are excellent, I found that out of my favourite Korean teachers of all time…one of them is was my level 4 teacher.

I hope you the best with your studies.  I myself have planned it out so that this term (level 6) will be my last.  Although I would love to move on to level 7, I figure as long I’ll feel satisfied by graduating the program at level 6.

Please continue to write about how you progress through your educational journey.
