Let's Learn Korean - 단속이 심하다니

이 공간을 내 개인 일기로 사용해도 되는 것인지 모르겠지만 한국어 습득을 위한 연습이면 어떤 주제든 허락한다고 하니... (potty language 제외)

얼마 전에 우리 회사 거래처인 모은행 사람들과 압구정동 퓨전 레스토랑에서 저녁을 먹으면서 대화 나눴다.

먹는 동안 그 사람들이 딱 한 주제를 가지고 계속 논의했다: 바로 성매매특별법과 동 법의 도입에 따른 단속이 한국 경제에 미칠 영향이 무엇일까. 그리고 단속으로 인하여 그 사람들의 생활이 얼마나 재미 없어졌다는 불평도 적지 않았다. 말의 핵심은 단순했다: 원래 2차에 갈 수도 있는 가능성이 있기에 룸쌀롱에 간 것이었다. 그러나 단속이 심해진 이래로 가고 싶어도 형벌이 너무 무거워서 다시는 못 가겠다. 이렇게 같이 저녁을 먹은지가 벌써 2달 전이었다. 당시에 너무나 순진한 나는 성매매특별법의 도입이 한국 leisure 문화의 변화를 이일으키지 않을까 하는 생각하고 있었다.

그러나 지난 주에 같은 은행 사람들과 또 저녁을 먹게 되었다. 이번에는 식사를 마친 후 같이 2차 가기로 결정되었다. 저번에 식사하면서 다시 갈 수 없다고 호소한 사람들이었기 때문에 룸쌀롱 가고 싶어 하는 은행 사람들의 태도가 나에게 의외이었다. 그때 룸쌀롱은 더 이상 유혹적이지 않는다는 말은 싹 없어졌나보다. 끝까지 순진만한 나는 “아무리 룸쌀롱에 간다 해도 2차는 없겠지. 단속이 그렇게 심하다고 했는데” 하고 있었다. 그런데 그 곳에서 2~3시간 놀다가 사람들이 아무런 꺼리김 없이 쌍쌍으로 없어지기 시작하는 것이 아닌가...

성매매특별법이 도입된지 3개월 체되기도 전에 헛것이 되어 단속이 벌써 간데가 없어진 모양이다. 법을 찬성하는 입장이든 아니든 이랬다 저랬다하는 정부의 행동이 보기 싫다.

Help me out here…I caught that you went to eat with your office workers in 압구정 at a fusion restaurant, and they talked about something the whole time…something about room salons being a leisure activity? That’s about as much as I could pick up…

I went out to eat with employees from a bank. They spent the whole evening talking about how the introduction of the draconian law to enforce the ban on the sale of sex was having dire effects on the Korean economy and how it had taken all the fun out of going to a room salon. They felt that whole attraction in going is the possibility that there might be something after, but the stiff penalties enacted made it not worth the gamble of getting narced on. That was two months ago. Then last week, I ended up going out for dinner with the same guys again. After hearing them say how they felt no urge to go to a room salon any more, it was a surprise to hear them say that they wanted to go there to continue the evening and even more surprising to see them slyly slip away with their “dates” as the evening progressed. Apparently the enforcement of the new law has already slacked off and that industry is already back to normal. The speed of these changes was a surprise.

I think everyone had to know it wouldn’t last. Certain laws are just chosen to be enforced at certain times it seems. Speeding one week, then stopping at the white line, drunk driving another, prostitution the next. The only one that seems to have held up some sort of consistency was the seatbelt one.
