Would you like to participate in the Peer Editing Project

English translation in the extended entry

Hi, this is Hyeyoung Jeong

I’m thinking of doing a group project and want to hear what you think about this idea. It’s a kind of writing project, of course writing in Korean. I need some volunteers for this. I think about 5 to 10 people would be effective for making this work. If there are more people who want to join, I guess we can divide into different levels. We can use this ‘Let’s learn Korean’ blog where everyone can register as a member or an author. Or if you already have your own blog and want to use that, it’s ok, as long as we can get connected to trackback or link, whatever.

I (or anyone from the group) gives a subject to talk about. or we can also work together to choose next topic. And we all write an article and check what others write and comment on others’ articles. The comments can be some correction or suggestion or just any comment about the content, showing agreement or disagreement, encouragement.... Then, at the end of one period, you write your second draft after you got some feedback from other members and me. It’s a kind of peer-editing.

It will be done on a weekly basis, so one article a week, plus comments on others’ articles and finally rewrite your first draft. Every member in the group needs to be very sincere and consistent. I want to see how this work and how people in the group feel about their progress. This is just my rough picture, so if you have any other ideas to improve this or any other comment,

황음치 speaking from here on

I think this project is a great idea and I will be participating as much as I can. Though with work and family commitments once a week may be difficult to do. If you wish to participate on this blog please register using the link at the top of the page and then post a message in the forums. This entry is also being reproduced in the forums. HOpe to see several people participating in this idea.

I just started a peer editing project at 한국어연습장. Over here I want to keep track of how it’s going and maybe start another peer group. And I wanted to let more people know about this or benefit from this, so I’m copying some o...

I am trying to delete the above post, but it’s not in the admin panel yet.  I just give my well-being and wishes to this project and will participate only if we can get Koreans involved.  I think a non-native speaker correcting another non-native speaker is not a good idea.

why doesn’t that show up in my admin panel?

Because it’s not a post. It’s a comment. I haven’t yet enabled user editable comments - it’s a little complicated. I’ll delete your first comment now.

Actually Joesp, with at least one native speaker (future k-teacher) we’ll be fine. There is loads of research that shows language learners learn by peer editing. Additionally langauge learners will improve thier speaking skills more by communicating with other learners rather than a native speaker. The caveat is that the learners need to be at around the same level for the improvement to take place.

  3. I’m interested, too.

I find writing a really good exercise but somehow writing just for myself seems a little pointless. I’ve never considered this way of correcting each other’s texts because I’ve always assumed that you’ll need a native speaker/teacher to do that.

I’d love to give it a try, though! It would definitely make me think more about grammar, sentence structure etc.

    Thanks for the idea!  smile

  4. I’ve just registered and activate my account, too, but when I try to log in it says my username is not registered. Does that take some time or did I do some mistake?  rolleyes

Could you try one more time and if that doesn’t work email me your login info so I can try troubleshooting. I looked in the control panel and your account is showing as activated.

Even though it takes me a long time to write just a few sentences, I would love to give it a try.

  7. 저는 한국항공대학교 항공우주공학과 2학년에 재학중인 한규성이라고 합니다.
Korean as a Second Language in MSN Group 에서 보고 왔는데요. ^^ 이 project가 정말 흥미롭군요. 저도 참여해도 될까요?! 오직 서강대 한국어교육 관련 학과를 위한 것라면, 거절하셔도 괜찮습니다.

I’m a 2nd year university student in Aero-space Enginnering Dep. of Korea Aerospace Uni.
I knew this blog from Korean as a Second Language in MSN Groups. This project seems really interesting. May I participate in this project?
But if I bother you, It will be OK to say “No.”.

다시 log-in 해 봤지만 it keeps saying that the username is not registered. I’ve entered the username in 한글, maybe I should have used the Latin alphabet instead? Should I just try to register with another username? (I tried but it says that the e-mail address is not available...)

    K.S. Han님,
    ‘참여할게요’가 맞습니다.
발음은 [께요]가 맞지만 적을 때는’게요’가 맞습니다.
    사전에서 찾아보시려면 ‘ㄹ게요’가 기본형입니다.
    저도 많이 실수했던 부분이에요.
    유란’s original ‘참여할요’ is right.
It’s pronounced as [께요] but when you write, ‘게요’ is right. The basic form for this in the dictionary is ‘ㄹ게요’
I used to be confused about this all the time.

    프로젝트에 대해서,
다른 분들의 아이디어나 의견을 듣고 싶었는데
    별다른 의견이 없으시네요.
그러면 일단 제가 처음에 제안한대로 우선 시작해보고
해 나가면서 어떻게 되어가는지 한 번 보도록 할까요?
다음 주까지 추가 지원자와 의견을 기다려보고
    일주일 쯤 뒤부터 시작해볼까합니다.
    어떻게 생각하세요?

I was hoping to hear some more ideas or suggestions on this but I don’t see any.
So, why don’t we just start it as I described and see what happens? Do you think we can play it by ear?
Let’s wait for more volunteers and ideas by next week, then let’s start it in a week or so.
    What do you think?

I’m happy about starting the peer editing project. So first we would need a topic to write about, right?
    Hm, 생각할게요!
