Let's Learn Korean - 중 시험 봤다

시험
오늘은 읽기, 듣기, 말 하기 중 시험 봤어요. 듣기 시험 은 어렵지 않지만 쉽지 않아요. 안 좋은 질문 한나만 있어요. 그 질문 은 긴 문장 한마디 듣고 따라 써야 되요. 이런 질문은 언어를 테스트 아닌 것이 대신에 memory test 이예요. Testing and Assessment course 에서 배웠어요. 그런데 한국말로 설명 잘 못해요.

그리고 쉬운 시간 에 다른 학생 가 수업에서 따라 쓰기 안 했으니까 왜 그렇게 한다 고 했어요. 저도 생각 해요. 읽기 시험은 긴 읽기 두 개 하고 짧은 읽기 두 개 나와요. 그래도 저는 일찍 끝났어요. 끝난 다음에 커피숖 빨리 갔다 왔어요. 그 다음에 말하기 시험 봤어요.

말 하기 시험 100분 걸려 도 돼요. 15쪽 있어요! 저음으로 문법, 조사, 단어, 질문 있어요. 거건 중에서 한나만 추측 해야 했어요. “…이/가 생기다” 문장 만들지만 생기다 잊어버려서 그 사람은 못 생겼어요 라고 썼어요.

그 다음에 그림 보고 회화 만들어 야 됐어요. 그리고 자기 소개 썼어요. 마지막으로 자유 시간 에 뭐가 하세요 이유도 써야 됐어요. 그것 한종이 fill up 해야 됐어요. 저는 많이 쓰지만 이상 해요. (There was no flow or organization to what I wrote). 이 시험도 일찍 끝났어요.

시험 후
집에 돌아오기 전에 엘리베이터에서 어떤 아저씨 나한테 영어로 말했어요. 근데 제가 계속 한국말로 답했지만 이 아저씨가 한국말 하수 있다고 영어로 했어요. 네 조금 알겠다 고 답 했어요. 아작 도 영어로 말하니까 제가 왜 영어로 말한다 고 했어요. 그 다음에 계속 한국말로 했어요. (read this about Koreans not speaking Korean to foreigners)

그리고 과자를 사러 동네 슈퍼에 갔어요. 동네슈퍼 아저씨 아주 친철해요. 우리 자주 간단한 이야기 해요. 보통, TV 나온것 나핸테 설명해요. 오늘 은 새러운 5,000원자리 현금 있어요. 이건 잔돈으로 받았어요. 캐나다 돈이 비슷해요.

If I may be so bold, you seem to have confused 쉽다 (easy 쉬운) and 쉬다 (resting 쉬는). Organization = 조직성 and flow = 흐름.

I know nothing about the field, but does repetition/transcription have no place in language teaching or testing? A good friend of mine recently took the new “test of spoken English” that is making the rounds in Korean companies these days. She said the hardest part was when the proctor testing her would say a sentence in English and she had to try and repeat it verbatum. Don’t you find that your ability to remember longer and more complex sentences in foreign languages is weaker than in your native tongue? Isn’t there some value in working on/testing this ability? I’m just curious…

I actually look forward to corrections - so please do. My wife is out of town until Friday, when she gets back, she’ll also correct me or so she said.

repitition should only be a small part of the language classroom. Listen and write what you hear is fine for small chunks - especially when working with minimal pairs (words with only one sound difference cap - cat. However what happened in this test was a long sentence had to be transcribed. This actually tests memory and not language skills. Even if this sentence had been spoken in English I probably wouldn’t have gotten it correct.

An additional problem is with listenings that required students to answer multiple questions for one listening. According to Hughes* ”there is the problem of candidates having to hold in their heads four or more alternatives while listening to the passage and, after responding to one item of taking in and retaining the alternatives for the next item.”

I don’t think there is any validity in testing that. It isn’t a very authentic exercise anyhow. Usually when trying to repeat what someone says in ones native language most people paraphrase or summarize what was said. Very, very rarely does anyone repeat verbatim what they heard.
