How many hours per week do you study?

I level tested at Sogang today. When the teacher asked me to introduce my self I said 이름이 왕음치 이예요. and then started laughing.  red face Everytime I tried to say something I started laughing because my mind was drawing a blank… I eventually asked the teacher to ask me questions. Once she started directing the conversation I did better but still not as good as I should have.

I am going to start in Level two which I think will be a little easy for me - but I don’t mind as I’ll be able to strengthen the foundation I have. I do know that if I had gone to level 3 I would have been able to do it, but would’ve really struggled and been weak. This way I’ll be strong and come out of it ready for level three. You can expect some Korean blogging from me starting December first though it will be light for the first couple of weeks as I’ll still be teaching until December 16.

I also made a new poll (it’s been ages since I changed it). How many hours per week do you study Korean? Currently I’m at zero, but vote will reflect my studies commencing December 1 - I’ll be taking classes for 20 hours per week plus study after class.

  2. Hi 왕음치,

Hearing that you will be starting Korean classes at Sogang brought back some good memories of when I was studying Korean at Yonsei Korean Language Institute (KLI). It also reminded me of how I was disappointed at being placed in the third level, instead of a higher level. I had studied Korean in the navy and then in college, so I felt I had somehow been misplaced, but it turned out that they had placed me in just the right level.

They may have placed you in a level too easy for you, but I think you have the right idea of how to take advantage of the situation.

By the way, I would like to suggest that you keep a daily blog of what you learn in your classes. Writing it down will help you organize it in your head, and having it in a blog format, always staring at you and always ready for review, will help you remember what you studied. Actually, you do not have to post everyday. Just keep study notes on your blog, saving them as a draft, and them post them when it is convenient. That is what I have been doing lately on my blog, and it seems to work for me.

I envy you. I miss being in a classroom setting. I hope you enjoy your classes.
