My friend Timothy Allen is leading the project to provide a Korean Language pack for moodle. He is having trouble keeping up due to low Korean skills and a lack of volunteers. He is requesting help. If you have the skills and/or know someone who does the help would be appreciated and it would also give you an opportunity to become familiar with moodle.
If you help out, I’ll take you out for coffee.

Congratulations to Kangmi on one year of public Korean study. She has a long post on her long journey that is well worth the read. Just a reminder to everyone that Kangmi’s blog was the inspiration behind the creation of Let’s Learn Korean, so without her blog we wouldn’t have this space.

A request for help from me. This entry will be stick for awhile so the details are below in the extended entry.
First the easy part: some of the navigation around the site is still in English and I would like to change it to Korean. I will make it so that hovering over Korean words will provide the English translation but I do need help with the Korean. Examples of what I would like to change include:
- archives
- photo gallery
- authors only
- your account
- member list
- categories
- recent comments
- recent entries
If there is anything else you can suggest please feel free to do so.
The second part is really for super advanced Korean speakers or native Koreans. This person will need to be familiar with site administration in English and in Korean. If not they should be able and willing to learn this. I would really like to make a Korean language pack for Expression Engine. Part of the reason is to enable users here to change their default language to Korean if they choose. Additionally I want to create website for my wife and her friends, but it needs to have a Korean backend so my wife can run it once it is created. She doesn’t have time to translate, She is also not terribly technically inclined so may get lost in Jargon.
If you are able to do this, once the translation is completed - I have been told that Expression Engine will provide one free copy of the software to whoever does it. This will be given to whoever does the work. If you need help with installation, I will do that myself. Anyone who is interested please contact me vie email.
Once the language pack is completed things like entry dates and times will display in Korean if the user chooses Korean as their default language.

오늘은 내생일 이예요.
Yesterday I had cake with my daughter and you can see her singing happy birthday to Daddy - I think she was more excited than I was. Probably because we don’t give her many opportunities for cake and sweets.
Today, I registered for Korean class at 시사영어사 - I will be starting next Wednesday from 1-3 Monday to Friday. Unfortunately I have to miss the first two days of class due to my teaching schedule. Anyhow I’m excited to be going even though it isn’t the program I would really rather take (이화 or 서강 are my first choices), but due to other circumstances I don’t have a choice. Level 3 here I come.

My goals and plans for the next 3 months are not yet finalized but here’s the general breakdown. First I haven’t studied or even seriously attempted to use Korean for the past three years due to 1. being lazy 2. doing graduate studies & 3. other prioriries. But all that has come to an end. Well except for the graduate school, but I don’t have to worry about that again until March. So here we go.
First I want to be able to touch type in Korean, so I will be putting 10 minutes a day into the typing tutorial I wrote about ages ago. That of course ties into the goal of actually writing in Korean - and a little more than just 안녕하세요, 이름이 뭐이애요? I intend to be writing at the mininum 1-2 short paragraphs at a time at least once a week by the end of December and maintain that through the end of February.
Due to a number of outside factors I will not be able to take a proper course offered by Sogang or Ewha so I will be instead going to SISA in Chongno for 2 hours a day and then supplementing that with a minimum of two hours of preview, review, DVD watching and internet resources. That’s just my self-study plan. When my wife get’s home in the evening, Monday to Friday, we will be using primarily Korean except for things that are vitally important and I cannot yet accomplish in Korean - then I will use English. For regular life things, if I can’t say it in Korean I just won’t say it
Weekends will be English time, can’t have my brain go to mush by doing Korean 24/7.
After the amount of time I have been in Korea, my Korean ability is at a pathetically low level. Now that I have both time and money I will now fix that. More details to come later.
