Book Review: Korean Classroom Metalanguage

Total words: 153

I recently put together this list of Korean metalingual words and phrases with their English and hanja translations. It has things such as how to say the parts of speech, the honorific/speech styles, etc. I also just added a section with words that are commonly used to explain grammatical patterns in the classroom. For example, the teacher might use the words 이유 (reason) and 결과 (result) to explain the conjunction 그래서 (therefore). I plan to add to this list as I learn more words, so feel free to leave a comment to suggest more entries. Here it is in two formats:

  • HTML - good for on screen viewing
  • PDF - good for saving or printing

edit
왕음치 speaking: I’ve tried to leave a comment on this entry and the template breaks. I’m not sure why as this is the only entry that everything breaks, but I am working to fix it.

Expressing Only One or a Limited Number

Total words: 220

So I’ve been seeing this 밖에 used as a grammer pattern for quite some time now, and never thought about using it myself until today.  You simply use it when you are trying to say you have only one or a few of something.  It’s use literally translates to “I have nothing outside of x nouns”

noun (number,counter) + 밖에 + negative verb

나는 양말이 두 켤레 밖에 없어요.
I only have 2 pairs of socks.  (I have nothing outside of 2 pairs of socks)

세해 복 많이 받으새요!

Total words: 403

세해 복 많이 받으새요. One of my friends suggested that this could mean may you recieve alot of clothes in the new year rather than happy new year but he generally has a corny sense of humor.

오늘은 한국말 수업이 다시 시자 했는데 새로운 선생님 있서요. 이선생님은 옛날에 나한테 가르쳤서요. 지난달 있는 선생님 보다 잘 가르치는것 같아요. 그래도, 아직도 CLT방법 조금만 사용 했어요. 그리고 문밥 5가지 공부 했어요. 너무 많다!

  • 이렇게 맛이 없는 걸 음식이람시고 만드었어요.
